Upasika Sarah Marks

A friend, adviser, and teacher of MLA since its inception in 2004. She has led retreats and taught classes at MLA since 2006.
Upasika Sarah Marks was interested in Buddhism as a child. She began to learn about Theravada Buddhism from Bhante Gunaratana, the author of the popular book, “Mindfulness in Plain English” in 1969. Later he introduced her to the late Venerable Sayadaw U Silananda. From1979 onwards she studied very closely with Venerable U Silananda on Abhidhamma, Visuddhimagga , and Vipassana meditation practice.

She helped and supported Venerable Sayadaw U Silananda in his teachings of Buddhism and Vipassana for many years until he passed away in 2005. She attended, and transcribed and edited many of Sayadaw’s Dhamma talks. She has done a number of long retreats in Burma and the United States.

Upasika Sarah Marks has been living a life of renunciation like a nun, keeping pure eight precepts since 1988.

For years she has conducted retreats, taught Buddhism classes, and trained yogis in various parts of the world, including Dhamma Vihara in Mexico, Theravada Buddhist Society of America in Half Moon Bay, Mettananda Vihara in Fremont, Mindful Living Alliance in Campbell, California, and Hsiang-Guang Monastery in Taiwan.
